Hugo Cabret is an orphan, he lived with his uncle in the clock of a train station, his uncle was the one responsible for fixing and managing the clock. When his uncle died, he started fixing the clock not to get caught and taken to the orphanage. Read the book and tell in the comments if he get caught or not, because I seriously don't remember.
